Stay informed on critical legislation.
We are currently highlighting Bill C-9, an Act to amend the Criminal Code.
We encourage respectful dialogue, protect the rights of all individuals to gather and practice their beliefs freely, and stay informed on how such legislation may impact communities. We also share updates and resources from organizations such as the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), inviting members to learn more and, if they choose, engage with their elected representatives on this issue.

A film screening was held at St. Patrick’s Parish, Markham on Thursday, March 19 at 7:00 PM in the Parish Hall followed by a Q & A with Alex Schadenberg, Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition. He explained why we need to support the campaign of the Archdiocese of Toronto, which seeks to prevent the expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to those suffering solely from mental illness.
Bill C-218, The Right to Recover Act, would stop this expansion from taking effect.

It takes less than three minutes to send a message. With a vote anticipated in the House of Commons in mid-April 2026, this is an important moment to act.

Our Community Outreach Program serves as a central hub for local engagement, connecting volunteers with individuals and families experiencing hardship. Through food drives, support for shelters, and resource distribution, we address immediate needs while fostering meaningful relationships and empathy within our community.
A key part of this initiative is our outreach to homebound seniors. Volunteers from our sub-committee connect as assigned “buddies” throughout the year—during Easter/Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas—through phone calls, cards, visits, and small gift baskets. This effort helps ensure that those who may feel isolated remain supported, remembered, and valued. CWL members are warmly invited to participate or refer someone who may benefit from the program.
In addition, we proudly host our annual Easter Luncheon at Cedarcrest Manor. On Easter Monday volunteers prepare and serve a warm meal to approximately 55 senior residents. This special gathering offers more than just food; it is a time for connection and celebration. With music, games, and entertainment, the event creates a joyful and welcoming atmosphere that residents look forward to each year. We extend our sincere thanks to all members whose generous donations and support make this meaningful event possible.

We are committed to ending exploitation through education, awareness, and survivor support. This year we guided by two key initiatives:
1. Shining a Light for Awareness focuses on educating the community to recognize the signs of human trafficking and promote prevention. In February, members participated in the Light the Province Blue initiative at the CN Tower, joining others in raising awareness of this ongoing issue.
2. IWIN (I Am Worth It Now) supports survivors by providing essential resources, including care backpacks for those entering wrap-around support programs, and promoting healing, dignity, and empowerment. The initiative also engages the community through awareness activities such as the Red Sand Prayer Service, which we plan to host in the near future.
Together, these efforts raise awareness, support survivors, and affirm the dignity and worth of every individual. We also continue to educate our members by inviting guest speakers and community partners to deepen understanding of human trafficking and related social justice issues.

Street Patrol provides direct support to individuals experiencing homelessness. Volunteers distribute food, clothing, and essential supplies while offering conversation and human connection. This initiative reminds us that dignity begins with being seen, heard, and valued.
CWL members join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) team in serving those in need downtown Toronto, while gaining a deeper awareness of the challenges faced by the homeless community. This is scheduled every April, October and December.
Members are encouraged to get involved and support this important initiative either by volunteering to distribute meals or contribute through donations.
Welcome to the Earth Day Activity Toolkit, which consists of resources designed to inspire and empower members in caring for God’s creation.
In publications like Laudato Si’, Pope Francis emphasizes that caring for the environment is a fundamental part of Catholic faith and social justice. Responding to this call, the League has increasingly emphasized environmental stewardship through resolutions, position papers and, most importantly, member action. Members exemplify the spirit of stewardship.
Why focus on Earth Day 2025 as a climate protection initiative? Although many days highlight environmental concerns, Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22nd, was chosen for its broad application to environmental stewardship. Moreover, 2025 is a key year for international climate commitments, making it a pivotal moment for support for stronger environmental action.
Nancy Boucher, a member of the national social justice subcommittee, has prepared this toolkit to offer Earth Day activities focused on environmental care and social justice. Please circulate this toolkit so parish councils can explore, share and adapt the ideas to fit the needs of their council and community. Some may align with and support activities councils already are doing, while others might inspire new initiatives among members.
Together, let us celebrate Earth Day not only as a time of reflection but also as a call to action—reaffirming members’ commitment to nurture and protect the gift of creation bestowed upon them.
