Padre Pio, from Stigmata to Sainthood
Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, also known as Padre Pio, was born on May 25, 1887 and died on September 23, 1968. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II on June 16, 2002.
Padre Pio is best known for his stigmata, the wounds of Christ that he bore on his body, which were first documented in 1918 and were visible until his death. He is also known for his strong devotion to God and the Virgin Mary, as well as his ability to perform miracles and perform bilocation, to be present in two places at once.
Padre Pio's life was marked by a deep spiritual devotion, which led him to join the Capuchin Franciscan order at the age of 15. He was ordained a priest in 1910 and spent the majority of his life in the monastery of Our Lady of Grace in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy (Foggia).
Padre Pio is the patron saint of civil defense volunteers, adolescents, and those suffering from stress and emotional strain. He is also often invoked for the healing of illnesses and the relief of pain.
On September 20, 1918, Padre Pio received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, which were visible on his hands, feet and side. The stigmata remained with him for the rest of his life, and were considered by many to be a sign of his deep spiritual devotion and holiness.
Padre Pio's life was filled with many miracles and supernatural occurrences. He also had the gift of reading souls, and many people would come to him for confession and spiritual guidance.
Saint Pio of Pietrelcina's feast day is celebrated on September 23rd, the anniversary of his death. He is also remembered on the Feast of the Stigmata, which is celebrated on September 17th.
His devotion to God and his spiritual gifts continue to inspire many people around the world, making him one of the most beloved saints of the Catholic Church. His life and teachings continue to be studied and admired by many, and his legacy lives on through the many people he helped during his lifetime, and the many people who continue to be inspired by his example today.
Here are five quotes of his that we can apply to our lives and learn from every day
It can be easy to feel unworthy to hold a certain position or be put in charge of a task. Padre Pio reminds us that we need only be willing to accept the challenge. We do not have to be perfect by any means. The Lord only requires that we say yes.
2. "God will never permit anything to happen to us that is not for our greater good."
This is a difficult reality to swallow, especially when we do not receive an outcome we had hoped for. But it's a great reminder of Romans 8:28: "We know that all things work for good for those who love God..." God knows what He is doing, after all, and He holds each and every one of us in the palm of His hand. We simply need to trust in His ways, as hard as that may be.
What great encouragement! Once we hand God the reins, He often has a funny way of returning the favor by blessing us more than we could ever have imagined.
4. "Serve the Lord with laughter."
This is self-explanatory. Laugh. Be joyful. Smile. We never know whose day we might make by a simple laugh, smile, or kind word.
"Pray, hope, and don't worry" is probably Padre Pio's most famous saying; however, we do not often hear the second part, which is: "Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayers.
General Intentions:
For all the vulnerable, those alone at this time of year and all the recipients of the food bank, that they may receive nourishment and love at this time of year.
For peace in the world, in our homes and for all those lives lost in in the war
in Israel and Ukraine. We pray for an end to all wars.
For all the deceased, may their souls rest in peace and the perpetual light shine upon them.
Dear Lord, Make me appreciative of the dignity of my Standing committee and its many responsibilities. Never permit me to disgrace it by giving way to coldness, unkindness or impatience. Please bear with my faults, looking only to my intention, which is to serve You in the person of each member of the Catholic Women’s League. Increase my faith, bless my efforts and work “For God and Canada.”
Amen
We humbly pray You, O God our Father, to bless the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. Bless our beloved country, our homes and families. Send You Holy Spirit upon us to give light to our minds and strength to our wills that we may know and fulfill Your great law of charity. Teach us to share with others at home and abroad, the good things You have given us. This we ask through our Lord Jesus Christ and the intercession of our patroness, Our Lady of Good Counsel.
Amen
Mary, Our Lady of Good Counsel; filled with the Holy Spirit, you were a faithful disciple of Jesus, your son. Intercede with your son for us that we may be faithful to our baptism, fervent in prayer, and generous in the service we give to our sisters and brothers. May the spirit of the living God, who graced you with the gift of counsel lead us in the way of truth and love. With the help of your prayers, may we come to rejoice forever with you and the great company of saints in the kingdom of heaven. Amen
Loving Father, open our hearts to your infinite love for all people, and to your presence with us wherever we go in your name. Lord Jesus, deepen the spiritual life of the Catholic Women’s League. Strengthen the faith and good works of our members, building-up life in the world by being Catholic and Living It! May we imitate you with works of mercy, welcoming the forgotten, suffering, or vulnerable wherever we encounter them. Holy Spirit, strengthen us to live our faith, witnessing to life, peace, and social justice daily wherever we are in Canada. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Good Counsel, may we be joyful and responsive to our Christian calling, by truly being Catholic and Living It! We make this prayer through Jesus, our Teacher and Messiah, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.
"We are situated upon traditional territories of the Anishinaabe Peoples and of the Haudenosaunee Peoples. These territories are covered by the Upper Canada Treaties. The First Nations community in closest proximity to the City of Markham are the Chippewas of Georgina Island.
We are gathered on the ancestral lands and waters of all Indigenous Peoples, who have left their footprints on Mother Earth before us. We respectfully acknowledge those who have walked on it, those who walk on it now, and future generations who have yet to walk upon it. We pray to the Creator for strength and wisdom that all may continue to serve as stewards of the earth."
Heavenly Father, We thank you for gathering us together and calling us to serve as your disciples. You have charged us through Your Son, Jesus, with the great mission of evangelizing and witnessing your love to the world. Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we discern Your will for the spiritual renewal of our parish. Give us strength, courage and clear vision as we use our gifts to serve You. We entrust our parish family to the care of Mary our mother, and ask for her intercession and guidance as we strive to bear witness to the Gospel and allow God's love to make all things new.
Amen
